First you need a good SLR. Film is great however Digital is better. I have both and I prefer Digital these days. There are some great consumer DSLR's (digital SLR) available on the market. The leaders in this space Canon and Nikon release a new consumer model every 9 - 12 months. These consumer models have 80% of the features the professional models carry at nearly half the price making them a great buy.
I recently purchased the latest Canon EOS 500D or Rebel T1i as it is called. Canon has done it again. A nice consumer body with numerous features that you would find in a high end Digital SLR such as Canon 50d.
Here are some of the features:
* Higher resolution sensor (15.1 effective megapixels)
* Extended ISO range up to ISO 12800
* HD video capability (720p at 30fps)
* New 3.0 inch 920K pixels screen
* Adjustable noise reduction and highlight tone priority
* Face Detection in Live View
* Peripheral Illumination Correction
* HDMI output
* Larger buffer in continuous shooting
* Digic 4 style menu design

A good macro lens cannot be substituted by the standard stock 18 - 55 lens. Canon has great selection of Macro lenses. Here are a few of them.
* EF 50 mm F2.5 macro
* EF-S 60mm f/2.8 Macro
* EF 100mm f/2.8 Macro
* EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS
* EF 180mm f/3.5L Macro
You can read the reviews of these lenses here.
I recently purchased EF 100mm f/2.8L Macro IS and am very pleased with the performance and quality of the output. Caution: Macro lenses are quite expensive and there is a lot of grey market stock available. Be careful and buy from a reputable dealer. I recommend B&H.
Lastly, a good flash diffuser. You can build your own or buy a diffuser.
